Shitty Shakespeare: In Love & War (theater) MA

50 Shakespeare monologues, covering the comedies, histories, tragedies and romances and including 3 sonnets from Shakespeare's canon. The monologues have been collected and memorized over a 40-year acting career. They are scenes that have been either prepared for acting class, performed or inspired by actual Shakespearean performances. The monologues are divided into three sections of Comedies, Histories and Tragedies. Each section is 40 minutes and will be performed separately in repertory on alternating nights. The Sunday performance will be selections chosen by the audience.

Sharyar, a King of Persia, is happily married until he discovers his wife has been unfaithful to him. In a rage, he kills his wife and vows to marry a woman each day and kill her the following morning until he has rid the world of women. Shahrazad, an over-confident young woman with an amazing gift for storytelling, marries the King in a foolhardy attempt to save woman-kind. With complete confidence in her gift of gab, she intends to finagle her life each morning by leaving the King with a cliff-hanger story, but she is rudely awakened when Sharyar proves he is a seriously wounded man who will kill her if she makes a wrong move. This raises the stakes of their relationship every night to a life or death situation. But, inadvertently, during the course of these 1,001 nights, Sharyar's hard outer exterior begins to fall away as he is awed by Shahrazad's extreme imagination and dedication to please (her dedication to please having evolved, inadvertently, from a need to save her own skin into an intense love of the King). The delicate balance is held until one day, Shahrazad runs out of stories. This realization leads to the dramatic climax: can Sharyar let go of his hate? And mostly importantly, will Shahrazad live?

Kevin Hiatt

Guitar Summit will present three of Kansas City's most exciting guitarists playing 30 minute sets of their unique performing styles. Steve Gouge is known for his performance of Nashville/Kentucky style fingerpicking that was developed by Chet Atkins and Merle Travis in the 1940's and 50's Beau Bledsoe is an exciting classical and flamenco guitarist who also adds some world music spice to his set by performing on the Arabic instrument the oud. Closing out the concert will be Kevin Hiatt performing his original instrumentals and songs on 6,7 and 12 string acoustic guitars. Hiatt's playing has been compared to fingerstyle guitar legends Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges.

Kansas City composer Kevin Hiatt will present a series of evening concerts of his chamber music on this years' KC Fringe Festival. The concert will present world premiere and first regional performances of song cycles for soprano,and baritone voices with piano. Setting texts by Ted Hughes(Five Songs from the River), Langston Hughes (Two Poems of Langston Hughes), and the composer himself (A Private Serenade), the concerts will present Hiatt's compositional work spanning a period of over twenty years. Other works to be performed include 'One Star in Sight' for flute and piano, and 'Garuda' for solo bass clarinet. Featured performers include Victoria Botero, soprano, Adam Hulstine, baritone, and Thomas Aber, bass clarinet.

Rachelle Gardner's large drawings depict organic environments not quite of this world. Funded by an Inspiration Grant from the KCArts Fund of The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City, the artist is currently translating these drawn environments into large scale sculptural installations. A garden of works such as "Petalo" shown here will be showcased in the Urban Culture Project's Jenkins site (1217 Walnut) from the third Friday in September through October. 'A Dinner Party' is the end of a love story. Michael Valentine has been invited to dinner by his ex partner Lawrence. It is 1943. England still has 2 more years before it is V.E. day, Rogers and Hammerstein open their new musical Oklahoma! And it is 24 years before homosexuality will become legal in the United Kingdom. The play is inspired by the great lyricist Lorenz Hart. Hart was famous for being half of the Broadway song writing team Rogers and Hart, producing hits like Blue Moon, The Lady is a Tramp and My Funny Valentine. He died in 1943 from pneumonia, but it is his battle with depression and alcoholism that is the source of inspiration for this play. Torn by his sexuality and unable to cope with the pressures, or see his place in society, Lawrence Hart decides to take his own life and invites his past lover Michael Valentine to dinner to see him for one last time. The opening scene finds Lawrence sitting in his dining room seen writing a letter. Moments later there is a knock at the door. It is Michael, a man who has a past with Lawrence and may be the last chance Lawrence has of finding peace and solace in his life. As the story unfolds the history of the characters comes out and lives are torn apart in this tragic dinner party.

The Sinking Ship, an original theatrical piece about rats, marauding seagulls and snitches sails onto the stage from TrapDoor Theatre Ensemble. Evem is a young rat aboard a ship of rats that have left the land to strike out on their own. After a year at sea, some rats feel like turning back. Mutiny arises which leads to one rat's act of sabotage. Evem witnesses this act and is forced to make a choice, keep quiet and let the ship sink or tell what he's seen and risk the life of his only family, his sister. TrapDoor Theatre Ensemble is a group of secular homeschoolers who improvise, create and perform their own original works of theatre. The ensemble is run and directed by the ensemble and one adult.
